The Olmsted County Historical Society offers a variety of educational programs, special historical events, exhibits, library and archives. It owns and operates five historic buildings and sites. A qualified staff manage the programs assisted by many enthusiastic volunteers. The museum is open Tuesdays thru Saturdays from 9am - 5 pm.

Oxbow Nature Center offers structured environmental education programs covering not only animal life, but natural history, outdoor recreation skills, and ecology. The building includes a class area, an exhibit of some of the more common snakes of the region, and displays and artifacts associated with our natural world.

Permanent wing damage hinders these eagles from ever being released back into the wild; they instead serve as an educational tool for visitors. The National Eagle Center is located where the Chippewa and Mississippi Rivers converge. The water never freezes and eagles can be seen feeding year round from the EagleWatch Observation Deck.

One of the largest caves in the Midwest. 60-foot waterfall, naturally sculptured passages, ancient fossils, and stalactite and stalagmite formations. Educational video presentation and gemstone mining packages available. Niagara cave is a constant 48 degrees year around, so a light jacket or sweatshirt is suggested.

Tour the largest Amish Community in the Midwest, where the horse and buggy still provide transportation, the home is lighted by kerosene lamps and water is heated on wood burning stoves. Unleash your student's imaginations with an educational and entertaining field trip to the Children's Museum in downtown La Crasse, WI. Two-hour field trips are scheduled between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, Tuesdays through Fridays. The field trip costs $3.50 per child. Field trip groups must be preregistered to receive discount rate.

Travel back in time to 1899 at Historic Forestville where characters from the past will tell us about life of the prairie at the turn of the century. For the budding spelunkers, visit Mystery Caves and enjoy a guided tour of stalactites, stalagmites, and underground pools. Open from mid-April to late October.

Nine miles of hiking and x-country ski trails weave through woods and prairie. Our programs include canoe trips, a nature program for K-8 students, folk music, pioneer crafts, trail hikes, and bird and flower hikes.
